Rotarian Barbara Taylor's daughter,
Margot Jackson,
recently presented a paper at an undergraduate
research conference held at the University of North
Carolina-Asheville. Margot conducted her research
last year in France and Mali, and wrote about the
enculturation of west Africans, particularly from Mali
and Senegal, who emigrate to France.
Each year our Rotary Club sponsors several high
school juniors to attend Boys State and Girls
State. This year both will be held from June 4th
to June 9th. Boys State will be at the University of
Central Arkansas while Girl’s State will be at Harding
University in Searcy.
Each program is a week-long intensive study and
practical application of the processes and problems of
self-government. Delegates are divided into cities,
counties, and political parties and hold campaigns and
elections. Students discuss and debate issues and
learn from state business and political leaders. One
highlight is a trip to the State Capitol where they
conduct a mock legislative session and meet the
Governor. Good citizenship and patriotism are
emphasized throughout the week.
This year our club is sponsoring four children and
relatives from our membership. Lauren
Wilkins, daughter of Rotarian Laura Wilkins
and
Kim Bundsgaard, daughter of Rotarian
Rich
Bundsgaard will be attending Girls State, while
Rotarian Rose Pulliam’s grandson Joshua
DeShay
and Rotarian LeRoy Duell’s nephew
Max Duell
will be attending Boys State. This is an
unforgettable experience for the delegates and a
great investment in our future!
If you have newsworthy items about Rotarian’s
children, email them to dwinters711@hotmail.com.
