August 2006

Dear Rotarian,

WELCOME to the Fayrotales newsletter

RI President Bill Boyd emphasizes membership in his August Rotarian magazine letter. In addition to pursuing potential new members for our Club, we need to remember to nurture the new members in the Club. Make an effort to remember their names and greet them when you see them.

  • District Governor Visit

At our July 27 meeting, we were privileged to have Peggy George, District 6110 Governor speak to us. She outlined the projects our District will emphasize this year.

Clean Water, a project in Nicaragua where we can pay for a new water well for a village.
Wheel chairs, continuing the project initiated by Springdale Club
Polio Plus We are too close to eradicating polio to let this Rotary initiative lapse.
Literacy The dictionary project that we participate in locally as well as internationally.
Medical Supplies Network They need continuing income to be able to ship the medical supplies every month. Buy a ticket on the Mustang to be drawn at District Conference in September.
International Peace The Youth Exchange and Group Study Exchange programs surely support this.

In addition, Governor George encouraged all members to do their part in reaching our goal of $100/member/year gift to Rotary Foundation.

    New Members recognized

Three new members were given orientation to the Club July 20 and recognized at the July 27 meeting. They are Hannelie Van der Merue, Charles Robert Porter and Mike Malone. Their Rotary sponsors were Elaine Longer, Harvey Williams and Doug Martin.

Be sure to greet them next time you see them.

Rotarians Kids Having a Busy Summer

Troy Long, son of Rotarian Larry Long, and Jill Ivey, daughter of Rotarian Debby Winters, will begin their college careers at the University of Arkansas this month. Both Troy and Jill have garnered Honors College Prestigious Undergraduate Fellowships, Arkansas Governor’s Distinguished Scholarships, and National Merit Scholarship money to support their college education. Jill plans to major in Chemical Engineering. She has worked this summer as a lifeguard at Wilson Park pool and has spent the past month backpacking in Nepal. Troy is also planning a career in engineering with his focus still undecided. Troy has been working with his own business providing inexpensive PC and home networking services. Troy and his parents have visited Sweden while his younger brother, Brady, has been on a short term youth exchange program. Lauren Wilkins, daughter of President Laura Wilkins, has recently returned from a short term youth exchange program where she spent a month in Spain.

Jack Threet, son of Past President John, and Austin Wilkins, son of President Laura took part in Washington County Historical Society Heritage School, learning skills and history of the Civil War period in our area. They performed at the Fayetteville Library showing off some of what they had learned in the school.
